Edna Lumb Travel Prize - 2005 Award Winners

Helen Cunningham
Fine Art, Level 2
Many artists have found Venice a source of inspiration, with
its visual riches and unique architectural heritage.
The dramatic location with its canals and waterways
giving special effects of light and colour adds
further to its visual impact. Helen Cunningham has never
been to Venice but the depth and strength of her research
provides her with a very firm grounding for her programme there.
She is particularly interested in the surfaces and textures of the city, especially as determined by decay and ‘wear’. Helen plans to record her observations and reflections in sketches and paintings and as a basis for further developing her etching skills.
Theodore Reeves-Evison
Fine Art, Level 1
Theodore’s choice of Japan for his travel award extends
to both old and the new. He has an interest in
the traditional Japanese game of ‘
Go’, and, also in the juxtaposition of an ancient civilisation
and its customs with the nation’s contemporary
prowess in advanced technology and invention.
For him an essential link between these is the
importance of structures and materials, with, on the one hand, the
natural elements of wood, shell and stone providing the patterns for
the game of ‘Go’, and, on the other, the complex
new shapes and materials of modern technology. The centre of the ‘Go’ cult
as well
as the headquarter institutions of Japanese technology make Tokyo the
pivot of his visit. He hopes his researches will lead to new possibilities for sculptural materials and processes for his
work
with three dimensional surfaces, patterns and texture.
Leontia Reilly
Art and Design, Level 2
Under the title ‘Finding Rowland’ Leontia Reilly
plans to trace a path through Italy using as her guide a collection of postcards (retrieved
from a flea market) sent home many years ago by the same person, Rowland
Todd, describing his visits to 29 places – where
he stayed, what he did and saw. Apart from this
travel programme, Leontia hopes to uncover the
personality of Rowland and how it is reflected in these scraps from his journey. She is interested in the dynamic
relationships between personal memory, fiction and reality. She plans
to document her quest through photography, sketches and a written record.
